From the Grand Bazaar, one of the oldest venues in town, NPP continued to promote visions of Istanbul at one of the newest venues in town as part of Mayadrom’s 1st birthday celebrations. However, the devastating earthquake of August 1999 changed the schedule.

“I first visited Istanbul in 1988 and more frequently since 1995. This city can get you high as this city can get you low. Just recently it got about as low as it gets, to the stage where such activities as painting and exhibiting pale into rather futile and pointless gestures. During the “Istanbul? Yeah!” exhibition I was asked about my wobbly minarets and had I been painting them during an earthquake? Until then, the idea of wobbly minarets hadn’t even occurred to me and at the time it was a rather light-hearted point of amusement.

Just after 03.00hrs on Tues 17 August, amusement turned into macabre reality with tragic proportions - an earthquake struck the outer regions of Istanbul. Most of us were lucky. Many thousands were not. The sense of shock will hang for some time to come. It was decided to continue with the planned art exhibition, but the proposed 1000-guest-plus- party to celebrate Mayadrom’s 1st birthday was cancelled.

At a time when Turkey is looking to keep her head high and overcome a traumatic period which now scars her history, let these paintings show the positive energy, vibrancy and colour which prevail here and how rich this city is, has been and will continue to be.”
